Pharmacy Professor Working to Bring Needed Care to LGBTQ+ Patients

JACKSON, Miss. – For many LGBTQ+ patients, finding proper health care can be difficult. A lack of expertise about issues they face, in addition to discrimination, means that many can go without treatment.

At the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, faculty are working to buck that trend and provide those needed services to patients.

Professor Retires After 11 Years with School of Pharmacy

JACKSON, Miss. – Scott Malinowski has been one of the most beloved members of the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy faculty. Set to retire after 11 years as a full-time faculty member with the school, and 16 years before that as adjunct faculty, he said that the feeling is mutual.

“Without a doubt, the thing I will miss most are the people,” Malinowski said. “The folks I work with at the School of Pharmacy have welcomed me as family, been there for me in my times of need and helped me grow as a person.”

Professor Brings Interprofessional Experience to Students

OXFORD, Miss. – Sally Earl’s career has been defined by a willingness to collaborate with those in and out of the pharmacy profession.

As a clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy, Earl’s work extends beyond the classroom. When Earl began her position at the school in 2017, she worked with the Stern Cardiovascular Foundation in Southaven. There she assisted with the appropriate management of medications for cardiovascular diseases with an interdisciplinary team of physicians and nurse practitioners.

UM Pharmacy School Hosts Browse Fair for Future Pharmacists

SNPhA Panel Opens Discussion of Diversity in Pharmacy

OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Mississippi chapter of the Student National Pharmaceutical Association hosted three UM alumni for its “Practicing as a Diverse Pharmacist” event, kicking off the group’s Spring Speaker Series.

The panel took place February 10 in honor of Black History Month. For SNPhA President Isaiah Brown, a first-year student at the School of Pharmacy, Black History Month is a time to celebrate how far the Black community has advanced, after progressing through different forms and intensities of oppression.

JACKSON, Miss. – Alexcia Carr got some strong clues growing up that she would go to school to be a pharmacist.

“A lot of people have a ‘person,’ and my grandfather was that person,” said Carr, who will graduate in 2023 with a Pharm.D. from the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy. “I went with my grandfather to doctor’s visits and gave him his medications,” Carr said.

University Kicks Off Semester with Vaccination Clinics

Over the course of four days near the beginning of the semester, volunteers from the School of Pharmacy administered more than 200 Pfizer vaccinations on campus to employees, students and students’ families visiting campus.

Pharmacy Professor Retires After 27-Year Career

OXFORD, Miss. – Randy Pittman’s path at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy took him from graduate to resident to faculty member. Now Pittman is set to retire on June 30 after a 27-year career at the school.

“I will miss the people I worked with the most,” Pittman said. “They have truly been my workplace family. We have laughed and cried together, suffered losses together, celebrated achievements together, but always worked with each other to make pharmacy education in the state the best for our students.”

Homeless Patient Care Focus of UMMC Students’ Lesson

JACKSON, Miss. – Pete Price Jr. is a 60-year-old homeless veteran with an addiction and PTSD. Today he’s having trouble breathing. He’s well-known to the team at the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s Emergency Department, but today his usual COPD seems worse.

His nurses are concerned, as is his pharmacist, who found out Pete’s prescriptions from his most recent ED visit last week were still in his shirt pocket, unfilled. His doctors think Pete needs to be admitted, but one of their colleagues, Dr. Paine, thinks Pete’s looking for a warm place to stay and isn’t really sick.

‘Zoom Gives Everyone a Front-Row Seat’: 5 Distance Learning Lessons from the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy

OXFORD, Miss. – Students at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy (SOP) spend their first two years on campus in Oxford, Mississippi, and their final years at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson — a 2.5-hour drive. The school started using Zoom in 2018 to connect the two campuses and provide an alternative to in-person instruction. 

“Geography no longer matters with Zoom. We can Zoom from anywhere and everywhere,” said Sarah Campbell, instructional design and training specialist at SOP.

UM Administrators Address Performance-Enhancing Drugs in New Book

OXFORD, Miss. — After noting the absence of an all-inclusive resource on performance-enhancing drugs, current and former University of Mississippi administrators worked together to publish “Sports Pharmacy: Performance Enhancing Drugs and the Athlete.”

The project was organized and guided by Marvin Wilson, associate dean emeritus for academic and student affairs at the School of Pharmacy. The resulting book provides comprehensive information on banned substances, such as performance-enhancing and illegal drugs, as well as comparative lists of prohibited agents and associated penalties for United States professional, collegiate and amateur athletes in various sports.

Faculty Feature: Alex Mills

Alex Mills joined the University of Mississippi Pharmacy School as an assistant professor of pharmacy practice in July. He comes to the school from Manchester University in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he served as an assistant professor of pharmacy.

Joining the School of Pharmacy faculty will be a homecoming for Tschumper, who received her Pharm.D. from the university, as well as a M.S in Chemistry and B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences.

UM Professor Becomes National Pharmacy Association President-Elect

Walmart Foundation Funding Fuels New Food Prescription Program

OXFORD, Miss. – Three University of Mississippi professors are recipients of a nearly half-million-dollar grant from the Walmart Foundation that will create a food prescription program to improve access to fresh food for Mississippians.

The $442,154 grant from the Walmart Foundation will fund a program that is expected to improve access to fresh fruits and vegetables and increase food security and food access for citizens of Charleston in Tallahatchie County.

Learners from several UMMC schools received hands-on instruction Friday in the administering of naloxone, brand name NARCAN®, a nasal spray that can force the dangers of an opioid overdose into retreat.

Teams comprised of multiple individuals from a school of pharmacy will hear from thought leaders and session speakers on topics such as bias awareness management, poverty simulation and more. OXFORD, Miss. – University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy student Victoria Miller received the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Student Travel Award, which assisted her in attending two of the organization’s annual meetings.

Miller, originally from Hartselle, Alabama, was an honoree at the 2018 meeting in Seattle and the 2019 conference in New York. The fourth-year student pharmacist joined other students, residents and practitioners from across the country to learn more about clinical pharmacy and the profession.

Interprofessional Activity Offers New Perspective to UM Pharmacy Students

The simulation, which was held at the Student Union, taught students from pharmacy, nursing, social work and nutrition about the day-to-day realities of low-income households enrolled in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, as well as disabled individuals receiving government assistance and senior citizens on Social Security.

Ole Miss Pharmacy Holds Inaugural African American Visit Day

JACKSON, Miss. – When the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy held its inaugural African American Visit Day at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, fourth-year student pharmacist Alisha Nicks saw her vision become reality.

Nicks developed “Melanin and Medications,” the theme of the visit day, after seeing the UMMC Schools of Medicine and Dentistry host similar events. Nicks met with UMMC medical student Jamarius Waller to learn about the past events and to brainstorm ways the School of Pharmacy could help Jackson-area high school and college students envision pharmacy as a potential profession.

Ole Miss Pharmacy Surpasses $1 Million in Private Support

Student Pharmacists Experience Research, Culture during Summer Abroad

OXFORD, Miss. – Summer is a great time to travel, and two University of Mississippi pharmacy students combined adventure and pharmacy after their selection to the International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation Student Exchange Program through the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists.

Second-year student pharmacists Harshin Sanjanwala and Sophie Durham spent part of their summer in Taiwan and Hungary, respectively, where they each received new research opportunities and insight to foreign cultures.

The North Mississippi Medical Center/Health Services Faculty Support allows Adam Pate, clinical associate professor of pharmacy practice, to work twice a week at the New Albany Medical Clinic, an ambulatory care center affiliated with the medical center.

The team proposed a simulated rotation environment to enhance PY3s’ experience on an infectious disease or internal medicine IPPE.

“We believe this will enhance the IPPE experience and better prepare students for APPE rotations,” said Stover, associate professor of pharmacy practice. “If successful, it may provide strategies or techniques for other IPPEs where space or time constraints prevent direct interprofessional or patient interaction.”

School of Pharmacy Establishes Anne Marie Liles Memorial Scholarship

OXFORD, Miss. ­– The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy has established a scholarship to honor the memory of Anne Marie Liles, the school’s former director of experiential affairs, who passed away Aug. 23.

The scholarship was founded with several gifts from School of Pharmacy faculty members who wanted to continue Liles’ legacy of community service. Once the scholarship is fully endowed, it will be awarded each spring to a rising fourth-year student pharmacist who has demonstrated a strong interest in community service during the first three years of the pharmacy professional program.

Liles was beloved by students and colleagues. Student pharmacists, faculty and staff have expressed how much Liles meant to them as a mentor, friend and pharmacist, many of them noting her constant practice of going above and beyond in every aspect of her work.

Haines, chair of the pharmacy practice department, is the organization’s president. Pharmacy Faculty Create Podcast to Inspire Pharmacists

OXFORD, Miss. – In the first few weeks of 2018, a small group of faculty from the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy launched PharmacyForward, a new podcast that features interviews with pharmacy experts and leaders about pharmacy practice, patient care and health care delivery in every setting.

The podcast, which has a tagline of “Transforming Knowledge into Action,” is dedicated to engaging and motivating pharmacists. The school’s Division of Pharmacy Professional Development produces the episodes, which are geared toward veterans and newcomers in the field.

Pharmacy Professor Wins Grant to Improve Pharmacy Practice

JACKSON, Miss. – Clinical associate professor of pharmacy practice Anastasia Jenkins received a grant from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Foundation to help advance and improve pharmacy practice and ambulatory care in the state of Mississippi.

ASHP’s Ambulatory Care State Affiliate Workshop grant, which Jenkins accepted on behalf of the Mississippi Society of Health-System Pharmacists, will support a workshop for pharmacy leaders in Mississippi to share ideas about how the state can improve the pharmacy care it provides. As part of the workshop, a representative from ASHP will present information to attendees about what is needed to develop an action plan and identify top areas of potential impact.

OXFORD, Miss. –Seena Haines and Kayla Stover, two University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy faculty members, were inducted as 2017 Fellows of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy at the organization’s annual meeting on Oct. 8 in Phoenix, Arizona.

The ACCP is devoted to the advancement of clinical pharmacy, which focuses on the science and practice of medication use. Fellowship in the ACCP honors those with a history of exemplary service and achievement in the pharmacy profession for at least 10 years.
