UM Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (STEMS REU) Program
The program aims to provide educational science research opportunities at the University of Mississippi to undergraduate students seeking research experiences and considering a career in research or academia. The program allows students to learn about cutting-edge STEM-related topics, develop presentation and communication skills, practice networking skills, and explore and develop their interest in cutting-edge STEM-related research. In addition, the program aims to educate students beyond lab specifics and nurture students for successful careers in STEM, graduate, and/or professional programs.

Eligibility: All undergraduate students at 2-year community colleges or 4-year colleges/universities. Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
Research shows that diverse teams working together and capitalizing on innovative ideas and distinct perspectives outperform homogenous teams.
Applications from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged.These groups include but are not limited to Black/African Americans, Latinos/Hispanics, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, Filipinos, Vietnamese, those with disabilities, first-generation college students, those from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds, and those underrepresented based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
Duration: 9 weeks (40 h/week) of education and research activities.
Schedule: May 28 to July 26, 2024 Each student is associated with a specific research project, on which they will work closely with the sponsoring faculty and other researchers. In addition, all students will participate in a weekly guest lecture with mandatory attendance. During the last week, the students will give a 15-minute presentation on the research they have been conducting in the program.
Stipend: $5,000. The stipend is intended to offset students’ living costs in the program. Please note that the total living cost in the summer in Oxford, MS, might be more than the stipend.
Allowances – There are limited slots available that will also provide the following allowances. Not all students will qualify for the allowances.
*Travel allowance – $200 to offset the cost of travel to/from Oxford, MS
Housing allowance – Housing will be provided and paid for on-campus in a Contemporary Hall single room. If the student forgoes the on-campus housing, they will be provided a $1,500 allowance but will be required to provide their own housing.
*University of Mississippi students will not be provided a travel allowance because they currently live in Oxford.

- Students may participate in the program for up to 4 summers, depending on the selection from the sponsoring faculty.
