The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy is globally recognized for its multidisciplinary research in the discovery, development and translation of innovative solutions to health care problems.

The school’s faculty and scientists maintain active, funded research programs in a variety of biomedical, social administrative and clinical sciences. Each compete for funding from a variety of sources, including the National Institutes of Health, other federal agencies, foundations and pharmaceutical industry.

In 2022 the Faculty Research Grant Institutional Rankings published by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy ranked the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy 19th amongst all the colleges of pharmacy in terms of total extramural funding. The pharmacy school consistently ranks in the top 20 of external research funding, as ranked by AACP.

In 2012, the School of Pharmacy developed a Research Visioning Strategic Plan to streamline research focus and enhance collaboration within the school, as well as the broader university and its medical center in Jackson. There are cross-cutting connections within the mission areas, the research strengths, and the strategic impact areas for collaboration In 2022, the Research Vision was updated to include additional areas of strength and an additional strategic impact area. The strategic impact areas continue to be cancer, cardiometabolic disorders, neuroscience/drugs of abuse, infectious disease, with the addition of medication optimization.
