Izzabella Christian
Second-year student pharmacist Izzabella Christian is making her mark. She was chosen to receive the Tery L. Baskin Scholarship from the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists, which is given to a student who exemplifies student leadership, pharmacy association involvement and community service. Why pharmacy?
I have always been interested in a career within healthcare, but decided to pursue pharmacy specifically because of the flexibility that a career in pharmacy offers. There are so many different career opportunities with a PharmD, and I really enjoy the variety of education and experiences that being a student pharmacist provides.
Why Ole Miss?
Ole Miss has a fantastic pharmacy program, consistently ranked within the top 25 in the nation, so I decided to visit. Beyond the beautiful campus and charming town, the community here was so welcoming, and I immediately felt at home. The support I have received throughout my time as a student here confirms that I made the right decision.
How does it feel to receive the Tery L. Baskin Scholarship?
I am so honored to be chosen as the Tery L. Baskin Scholarship recipient through the APhA Foundation. I was shocked when I received the email notifying me that I had been selected, as there were thousands of pharmacy students across the country that applied for these scholarships, but that made it all the more exciting.
What other pharmacy organizations are you involved with?
In addition to my role as president-elect of APhA-ASP, I am also involved in the University of Mississippi Pediatric Pharmacy Association student group, PediaRebs, in which I serve as vice president. I am also a student ambassador for the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy, an appointed class co-historian, and research assistant for the Department of Pharmacy Administration. Being involved has enhanced my time within pharmacy school so much. The friendships and experiences that I have gained are irreplaceable.
What are your career goals?
Currently I am interested in pursuing a career in pediatric pharmacy, as I really enjoy working with children and the unique clinical application that it requires. One of the aspects of pharmacy that sparked my interest is the patient interaction, and as someone who has always enjoyed working with kids, I love that pediatric pharmacy would allow me to combine two of my passions into one career.
What is your favorite class and why?
My favorite class is Physical and Psychosocial Aspects of Pediatric Pharmacy with Dr. Crumby. I have always been interested in pediatric pharmacy, but this course has opened my eyes to the unique care that pediatric patients require, and has deepened my interest in pursuing a career as a pediatric pharmacist.
What advice do you have for future students?
There are so many directions that you can go within the pharmacy field. Explore as many paths as you can, determine where your passions align and pursue as many opportunities as you can that will help you reach your goals.
What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time I enjoy hanging out with my friends, staying active and attending Ole Miss sporting events.
What are your favorite shows to binge-watch?
New Girl, Grey’s Anatomy and The Crown.
