OXFORD, Miss. – Exploring thunderstorm asthma and examining how Gulf Coast universities can respond to natural disasters are the focus of two new University of Mississippi seed grants funded through the Flagship Constellations initiative.

Thunderstorm asthma is the phenomenon where pollen can break into smaller pieces during severe thunderstorms and cause asthma events. Researchers are collecting and characterizing air pollution, specifically fine particulate matter and pollen, in north Mississippi to investigate the link between air pollution and thunderstorms to better understand the occurrence.

From Desert to Ocean, Toxicology Student Absorbs Marine Sponge Knowledge

OXFORD, Miss. – It wouldn’t seem Amelia Clayshulte was destined to study marine sponges living in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

However, the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy doctoral student grew up going to the coast of North Carolina with her mom’s family, where she would spend a week each summer exploring the salt marshes that opened her mind from its land-locked state.

Interprofessional Activity Offers New Perspective to UM Pharmacy Students

OXFORD, Miss. – First-year student pharmacists at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy gained a new perspective after participating in a recent Community Action Poverty Simulation, a program that is part of the Missouri Community Action Network.

The simulation, which was held at the Student Union, taught students from pharmacy, nursing, social work and nutrition about the day-to-day realities of low-income households enrolled in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, as well as disabled individuals receiving government assistance and senior citizens on Social Security.

Ole Miss Pharmacy Holds Inaugural African American Visit Day

JACKSON, Miss. – When the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy held its inaugural African American Visit Day at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, fourth-year student pharmacist Alisha Nicks saw her vision become reality.

Nicks developed “Melanin and Medications,” the theme of the visit day, after seeing the UMMC Schools of Medicine and Dentistry host similar events. Nicks met with UMMC medical student Jamarius Waller to learn about the past events and to brainstorm ways the School of Pharmacy could help Jackson-area high school and college students envision pharmacy as a potential profession.

Early Entry students celebrating ThanksgivingNovember 15, 2019

OXFORD, Miss. – When Marvin Wilson introduced the idea of an early entry program to the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy in 1994, he didn’t do so to help student pharmacists find best friends. His goal was to attract more academically ambitious future pharmacists to Ole Miss, not to create cohorts of students that felt like a family within a family.

But in the end, Wilson, who retired as associate dean for academic affairs in 2013, contributed to all of that and more when he designed a program that would allow high-performing high school seniors to secure their spot in the pharmacy professional program right out of high school.

Ole Miss Pharmacy Surpasses $1 Million in Private Support

OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy accomplished an ambitious goal during the 2018-19 fiscal year as it surpassed $1 million in private support.

Supporters contributed $1.1 million in gifts and commitments, marking the fifth time since 1982 the school moved past the seven-figure benchmark.

JACKSON, Miss. – The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy’s Center for Clinical and Translational Science is one of 11 innovative, community-based organizations across the country awarded a grant from the AstraZeneca HealthCare Foundation’s Connections for Cardiovascular HealthSM program to help improve heart health.

The $125,000 grant will provide continued funding for CCTS to administer “Healthy Hearts in the Heart of the City,” a program that offers free health screenings, classes on heart health and medication therapy management services in partnership with Families First for Mississippi and other community organizations in the Jackson area.

Eli Lilly Scientist Named Joseph Sam Distinguished Alumnus

OXFORD, Miss. – Maria Alvim Gaston, a 2000 University of Mississippi graduate with a doctoral degree in medicinal chemistry, was named the School of Pharmacy Department of BioMolecular Sciences’ 2019 Joseph Sam Distinguished Alumnus Award honoree.

Gaston, a principal research scientist at Eli Lilly and Company, delivered the Joseph Sam Distinguished Alumnus Lecture on September 23 with a presentation titled “A Scientist Journey—Moments of Truth.”

Opioid Researcher to Deliver 2019 Waller Lecture

OXFORD, Miss. – Laura M. Bohn, professor of molecular medicine and neuroscience at The Scripps Research Institute, will deliver the 2019 Coy W. Waller Distinguished Lecture at the University of Mississippi.

The Oct. 11 lecture, “Refining Opioid Receptor Signaling to Improve Therapeutic Potential,” will build on her nearly three decades of research into the impact of opioids on the brain. The School of Pharmacy and its Department of BioMolecular Sciences are hosting this free event at 11 a.m. at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts.

OXFORD, Miss. – University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy student Matthew Wittman was one of nine students nationwide selected to the Pharmacy Quality Alliance-CVS Health Foundation Scholars Program.

The program is designed to support student interest in performance management and quality improvement while fostering student-mentor relationships. Wittman will work on a unique research concept with the assistance of a mentor and present the results at the PQA Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland, next May.

Stamps Scholar Sets Sights on Cancer Research, Community Care

OXFORD, Miss. – From the moment Brandon Ashmore’s brother brought home study notes from his pharmacy classes at the University of Mississippi, Brandon, then 11 years old, knew that pharmacy was in his future.

Seven years later, Ashmore started his first day of school at Ole Miss as part of the pharmacy school’s competitive Early Entry program, a member of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College and as one of 13 Stamps Scholars in the Ole Miss class of 2023.

OXFORD, Miss. – A University of Mississippi senior in the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College has been awarded a prestigious scholarship from the National Collegiate Honors Council.

Kennedy Dickson, a forensic chemistry major from Whittier, California, has been named a 2019 NCHC Portz Scholar. She is one of three recipients nationwide and will present her honors thesis, “Cannabinoid Conundrum: A Study of Anti-Epileptic Efficacy and Drug Policy,” in November at the NCHC conference in New Orleans.

Student Research Program Explores Brain Wellness

OXFORD, Miss. – Six University of Mississippi undergraduate students spent their summer exploring research opportunities in neuroscience and brain wellness as part of the inaugural Neuroscience Summer Research Education Program.

An initiative of the university’s Flagship Constellations, the program provided stipends for undergraduate students to engage in eight-week collaborative research with a mentor exploring neuroscience related to brain wellness.

For Research and Development: Mississippi Pharmaceutical Company Supports UM with Major Gift

OXFORD, Miss. – Impressive work by the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy and the National Center for Natural Products Research (NCNPR) inspired a pharmaceutical company to make a major gift.

Clark Levi, owner of Phlight Pharma of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and Marc Fluitt, head of Strategic Initiatives, presented a $200,000 gift to the university, half of which will be used at the pharmacy dean’s discretion; the other half is designated to help discover medicinal properties in plants.

Pharmacy Graduate Finds New Strengths through Weightlifting

OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy and North Mississippi Medical Center renewed a faculty support partnership that will continue to provide care to patients with chronic conditions throughout the region.

The North Mississippi Medical Center/Health Services Faculty Support allows Adam Pate, clinical associate professor of pharmacy practice, to work twice a week at the New Albany Medical Clinic, an ambulatory care center affiliated with the medical center.

University Obtains New Patent for Poison Ivy, Oak Vaccine

OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Mississippi has been issued its fourth patent for a product that could prevent the painful itching and rash due to exposure to poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac.

The compound is based on research conducted in the UM School of Pharmacy and at ElSohly Laboratories IncHapten Sciences, a Memphis-based biopharmaceutical company, obtained a worldwide, exclusive license for the technology from the university in 2010 and has conducted extensive preclinical and clinical development work since then.

When Faculty Give Back: Former Department Chair’s Gift to Benefit School of Pharmacy

OXFORD, Miss. – A former University of Mississippi faculty member – known globally as a leading pharmaceutical marketing expert – has made a major investment in the department he once led at the School of Pharmacy, increasing educational experiences for students.

With a $350,000 IRA transfer, Dr. Mickey Smith established a pharmacy administration endowment named for him and his late wife, Mary. The generous resources will provide funding for graduate student support, faculty development and seed funding for research projects. It will also help cover conference travel expenses and provide support for guest speakers and lecturers among other needs.

Pharmacy Professor Lectures at National Organization

OXFORD, Miss. – S. Narasimha Murthy, professor of pharmaceutics and drug delivery at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy, delivered a lecture at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine in Washington, D.C. on Monday, May 20.

His talk was titled “Topical Products for Dermal and Transdermal Delivery of Pain Medications” and focused on challenges in formulating topical pain creams. NASEM invited Murthy and other stakeholders to provide expert opinions on topical pain creams as part of its study on the safety and effectiveness of ingredients used in compounded topical pain creams.

Graduate Students Receive Grants for Research Efforts

OXFORD, Miss. – Twenty-one University of Mississippi graduate students, including six from the School of Pharmacy, have been awarded Graduate Student Council Research Fund grants to support their research, study and creative scholarship.

The $1,000 competitive research grants, funded by the UM Graduate School and Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, are for projects conducted through April 2020.

Pharmacy Graduate Named Walmart Scholar

OXFORD, Miss. – Recent graduate and new pharmacist Lauren Pohl, who earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy on May 11, was named a 2019 Walmart Scholar by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Walmart Scholars Program.

The honor and accompanying $1,000 scholarship are given to student pharmacists who are committed to a career in academic pharmacy. The scholarship will allow Pohl to attend the 2019 AACP annual meeting and teachers seminar in Chicago this July.

PQA and School of Pharmacy Establish Medication Quality Research Partnership

ALEXANDRIA, Va. ­– The Pharmacy Quality Alliance (PQA) and the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy have established a three-year research partnership to develop and evaluate measures of prescription medication quality.

The University of Mississippi team will support PQA’s measure research and development work by evaluating quality measures using CMS Medicare and Medicaid administrative claims data.

OXFORD, Miss. ­– Three University of Mississippi professors – with a combined more than eight decades of service to UM – were appointed Distinguished Professors during the end-of-the-semester faculty meeting Friday (May 10) in Fulton Chapel.

The professors are Charles Hussey, associate dean for research and graduate education in the College of Liberal Arts and professor of chemistry and biochemistry; Karen Raber, professor of English and executive director of the Shakespeare Association of America; and Michael Repka, chair and professor of pharmaceutics and drug delivery and director of the Pii Center for Pharmaceutical Technology.

OXFORD, Miss. ­– The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy rose to sixth in the nation in external research funding for 2018, according to the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.

Research funding reached $21.2 million in 2018, placing the School of Pharmacy second in the SEC and among the top 5 percent of pharmacy schools nationwide.

OXFORD, Miss. ­– Numerous graduate students in the Department of BioMolecular Sciences within the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy earned awards for their presentations at the UM Neuroscience Research Showcase in April and the Mississippi Academy of Sciences Annual Meeting in February.

Erik Hodges, a graduate student from Norman, Oklahoma, was honored at the Neuroscience Showcase. Student award winners at the MAS meeting included Stephanie Burr of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; Amelia Clayshulte of Las Cruces, New Mexico; Mallory Harmon of Meridian, Mississippi; and Alaa Qrareya of Palestine.

UM Student Pharmacists Selected to Prestigious Practice Rotations

OXFORD, Miss. ­– Sixteen University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy students will travel across the country and around the world to participate in competitive Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences that will enhance their pharmacy practice skills.

APPEs are part of the UM School of Pharmacy’s curriculum. All fourth-year student pharmacists must complete 10, four-week long rotations at various pharmacy practice sites. Working with pharmacy preceptors at each location, student pharmacists will gain knowledge, skills and practice experience.

UM Graduate Student Selected for Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute Course

OXFORD, Miss. ­– Amelia Clayshulte, a second-year Ph.D. student in the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy’s Department of BioMolecular Sciences, was accepted into a tropical taxonomy course at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.

The internationally competitive course takes place at the Bocas Research Station in Bocas del Toro, Panama, for 21 days this summer. Clayshulte, originally from Las Cruces, New Mexico, will be one of approximately 15 students participating in a course titled “Understanding Relationships of Non-bilaterian Metazoans: Sponges.”

UM Adds Training in 3D Printing to Course in Pharmaceutical Tablet Technology

OXFORD, Miss. ­– The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy is offering a hands-on course that will include an overview of how to use 3D printing to create pharmaceutical tablets, also known as pills, that are commonly made using a labor-intensive tablet compression process.

The Hands-On Course in Tablet Technology, offered through the School of Pharmacy’s Pii Center for Pharmaceutical Technology, has an over 20-year history of instructing in traditional and advanced technologies used to make pharmaceutical solid oral dosage forms, such as wet granulation and hot melt extrusion. With advances in 3D printing technology, the course’s administrators see an opportunity to expand the course’s curriculum.

OXFORD, Miss. ­– After a nearly 40-year career with the University of Mississippi, Vice Chancellor Emerita of University Relations Alice Clark is being honored as the 2019 School of Pharmacy alumna of the year.

Ole Miss Student Selected as Officer for National Pharmacy Organization

OXFORD, Miss. ­– Miranda Craft, second-year student at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy, was selected for the national role of student exchange officer with the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists.

Craft will be installed as part of the International Standing Committee at the APhA Annual Meeting in Seattle on March 22-25. The Jackson, Missouri, native will assist the current student exchange officer in her first year before assuming all duties in year two.

Two doors down, in room 13, a man repeats the complaint. His name: Blaine Penner. In fact, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s Judith Gore Gearhart Clinical Skills Center, in separate rooms, Blaine Penner after Blaine Penner is telling the same story at the same time.

UM Student Pharmacist Accepts Mayo Clinic Internship

OXFORD, Miss. ­– Jontae Warren, a second-year student at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy, accepted a summer internship through the Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences in Rochester, Minnesota.

The internship will give Warren experience in the clinical/outpatient setting as he rotates through six pharmacies during the 10-week stint. Warren will counsel patients, review prescription orders, participate in pharmacists’ interventions and provide drug information to health care providers as part of an interdisciplinary team.

CEO of Clinical Pharmacy Organization Delivers Hartman Lecture

OXFORD, Miss. ­– Michael Maddux, executive director of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, is set to deliver the UM School of Pharmacy’s annual Charles W. Hartman Memorial Lecture at the University of Mississippi.

The lecture will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 1 in the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts. Maddux’s talk is titled, “Professional Transformation through the Lens of Clinical Pharmacy: Déjà Vu all over Again?” Attendance is free and all are welcome.

OXFORD, Miss. ­– Three faculty members in the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy have won competitive 2019 New Investigator Awards from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, giving the school five winners over the past two years.

AACP honors a limited number of research projects from junior faculty across the country every year. UM’s three winners for 2019 were Marie Barnard, Sujith Ramachandran and Vitor Pomin, who join UM’s two 2018 recipients of the award.

Pharmacy Faculty Honored with ASHP Distinguished Service Awards

Seena Haines, chair and professor of pharmacy practice, received the Distinguished Service Award for her work in ASHP’s Section of Ambulatory Care Practitioners. Joshua Fleming, clinical associate professor of pharmacy practice, earned the New Practitioners Forum Distinguished Service Award.

Pharmacology Professor Awarded NIA Grant for Research on Aging Brain

OXFORD, Miss. ­– Nicole Ashpole, an assistant professor of pharmacology in the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy, has been awarded a grant from the National Institute on Aging to research memory impairments in advanced age.

With this award, Ashpole and her team will explore a specific hormone in the body that decreases with age, as well as its ability to communicate with the brain and its effects on learning and memory. The hormone is insulin-like growth factor-1, or IGF-1.

Ole Miss Professor Earns Grant to Produce Anticancer Natural Products from Bacteria

OXFORD, Miss. ­– Cole Stevens, a faculty member in the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy has been awarded a grant from the National Cancer Institute for cancer prevention research using natural products.

Stevens, an assistant professor of pharmacognosy in the Department of BioMolecular Sciences, is working to engineer bacteria to produce significant amounts of gephyronic acid, a polyketide that has potential as an anticancer therapy.

Faculty Feature: Amanda Capino

JACKSON, Miss. ­– Amanda Capino is a clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy and a practicing pharmacist in the UMMC NICU. When she is not teaching on the school’s Jackson campus, she is helping infants born prematurely or who need special care in the NICU, providing guidance on their medication and precepting student pharmacists.
