Annual Operation Immunization Event Offers Flu Shots
Student pharmacists gain professional experience, promote healthy campus
OXFORD, Miss. – Operation Immunization returns to the University of Mississippi campus on Sept. 15, when student pharmacists will provide flu shots to students, faculty and staff at Ole Miss.
The program, offered by the Ole Miss chapter of the American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists, provides hands-on experience for student pharmacists.
Dates and locations for the immunization drive are:
- Sept. 15, 1-4 p.m. – School of Pharmacy Atrium
- Sept. 22, 1-3 p.m. – Business Row (Galtney-Lott Plaza)
- Sept. 29, Noon-4 p.m. – Grove stage
- Oct. 20, Noon-4 p.m. – The Circle
- Oct. 26 10 a.m.-2 p.m. – Student Union
“Operation Immunization is a wonderful example of what can be accomplished through partnership. Through the collaboration between APhA-ASP and University Health Services Pharmacy, our student pharmacists have the opportunity to put their knowledge and skills into practice while helping make flu vaccinations accessible to students, faculty and staff across campus,” said Kristen Pate, associate dean for student affairs in the School of Pharmacy. “Their dedication to this initiative reflects their commitment to serving our university community and demonstrates the meaningful impact students can make through service and leadership.”
Jillian Babb, a second-year pharmacy student from Tupelo, Mississippi, serves as chair of this year’s project.
“Operation Immunization is a meaningful opportunity for us as pharmacy students to take what we've learned in the classroom and use it to make a direct impact on the health of our community. By providing accessible vaccinations and education, we hope to help protect the Ole Miss and Oxford communities while encouraging students to grow as compassionate and confident future pharmacists,” Babb said. “It is especially rewarding to see the skills we've worked so hard to develop translate into meaningful interactions with patients and tangible service to our community.”
Flu shot recipients must present a valid student or employee Ole Miss ID and a current prescription insurance card. Many insurance plans fully cover the cost of the flu shot, and the price without insurance is $40.
For those without insurance or whose insurance does not cover the entire amount, the remaining balance will be charged to their Bursar account.
