Pharmacy Student-Athlete Earns SEC Award
Mason Hickel recognized for volunteer efforts
Oxford, Miss. – Mason Hickel, a School of Pharmacy student and member of the University of Mississippi men’s track team, has been named the 2025-26 Brad Davis SEC Community Service Award male athlete winner for Ole Miss.
The annual awards recognize male and female athletes from each of the 16 SEC member schools. Named for former associate commissioner Brad Davis, who died from cancer in 2006, each award carries a $7,500 postgraduate scholarship.
“The Ole Miss pharmacy and athletic programs offer great avenues for us to serve, and it’s inspiring to be able to give back to the community in different ways,” Hickel said. “Volunteering with my classmates and fellow athletes has been rewarding because we’ve seen the impact of these efforts up close, and it’s meaningful to connect with people and help them live better lives.”
The Phoenix, Arizona, native participated in numerous community service projects throughout the year, including Adopt-A-Basket, which provides Thanksgiving baskets to families in need; Area 4 Special Olympics; Feed the Sip, a food donation initiative for elementary students; children’s literacy program Reading with the Rebels; and Trunk or Treat that features Ole Miss athletes passing out candy and playing games with youngsters.
Hickel’s academic and athletic performance, and his involvement in the community make him an excellent ambassador for the university, said Hope Tulchinsky, director of student success and academic advising for the School of Pharmacy.
“Mason is an exceptional individual with a consistently positive attitude and strong academic abilities. He always has a smile on his face and brings a genuine sense of kindness wherever he goes,” Tulchinsky said. “Mason stops by my office weekly just to check in, say hello, and see how things are going, which speaks volumes about his character and thoughtfulness. He is dependable, compassionate, and always willing to help others.”
Hickel graduated with a bachelor’s in pharmaceutical sciences in 2025 and is working on a pharmacy doctorate. He was named College Sports Communicators Academic All-District in 2025 and is a two-time U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic honoree. He will graduate in 2028 and plans to pursue a career within the corporate pharmaceutical industry.
“Being nominated filled me with a sense of gratitude, and I’m humbled that someone submitted my name,” Hickel said. “This is a special award that honors volunteer outreach, but none of us do it for of recognition. The name of the game is doing something for someone else and making a difference in our communities.”By
