OXFORD, Miss. — University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy graduate student Rishi Thakkar was recognized with the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists Best Abstract Award.
A student in the Department of Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery, Thakkar’s paper titled “Optimization and Characterization of Hot‐Melt Extruded Antiinflammatory and Local Anesthetic Bio‐Adhesive Semisolid Formulation Using Design of Experiments (DoE)” was among the top 10 percent of abstracts highly ranked by AAPS abstract screeners.
AAPS will recognize Thakkar at its annual meeting AAPS PharmSci 360, held November 3-6 in San Antonio, Texas.
The preliminary aim of Thakkar’s research was to study the applicability of HME in continuous manufacturing of topical semi-solid ointment formulations. Thakkar looked for HME to have better control over the process variables that led to the production of a more uniform ointment product in comparison to the conventional method.
From the studies, it was concluded that the controlled processing variables in HME led to a reduced batch-to-batch variation and improved the consistency in the Critical Quality Attributes (CQA) of the ointments.
