University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy 2023 Highlights of Achievements, Impact and Community

Education

  • We created a new master’s program in dietary supplements and cannabis.
  • We celebrated 25 years of the meeting of the Tripartite Committee for experiential education and a PGY-1 residency match rate of 88%.
  • We participated in Mental Health First Aid training to better support our students and SOP community.
  •  
    Research

  • We were ranked in the Top 20 for federal research funding in the AACP FY 22 institutional research rankings.
  • We received over $18 million in grants and contracts, including a new five-year contract for the cultivation of marijuana for research from NIDA, a grant from the Office of National Drug Control Policy to focus on the opioid crisis and reduction in drug use, two
    grants from NASA’s Mississippi Space Grant Consortium (MSSGC)’s Student Led STEM Activities Program to conduct research on space medicine, and continued funding for our telehealth project, glycoscience COBRE grant, and dietary supplement safety work.
  • We advanced our technologies and innovations, with multiple faculty receiving SMART ACT funding, STTR funding, I-RED funding, or other support to accelerate product development.

    Practice

  • We collaborated with state pharmacy associations, state health agencies, and CPESN to advance practice in Mississippi and had four student pharmacists secure spots in the ACT Pharmacy Collaborative’s Community Pharmacy Student Scholar Leaders Program, designed
    to transform community practice.
  • We dispensed our 3000th prescription in the Jackson Free Clinic, along with dispensing prescriptions in the Oxford Medical Ministries Clinic and providing medication reviews, medication education, and chronic care management to patients in these clinics.

    Service

  • In partnership with the MS Attorney General’s Office and other campus partners, we provided NARCAN training to campus leaders and students.
  • We held leadership positions in national professional and scientific organizations, with our ISPOR student chapter receiving the international chapter of the year award, and we continued to host the International Conference on the Science of Botanicals, the
    tablet technology course, and the mid-south glycoscience meeting to provide learning and collaboration opportunities.

    Engagement

  • We honored our pharmacy pioneers for paving the path for future students from underrepresented populations.
  • We celebrated Dr. Lauren Lyles who received the University’s Outstanding Young Alumni Award for her outstanding contributions to the profession of pharmacy.
  • We established and expanded partnerships with BD, St. Jude’s, Takeda, and OnDemand Pharmaceuticals to provide dynamic, future-oriented learning experiences for our pharmacy and graduate students and to foster innovation.
