Hands-on Course in Tablet Technology

The Hands-on Course in Tablet Technology is a post-graduate educational program that provides an extensive review of conventional and advanced manufacturing technologies, including hot-melt extrusion, that is used to develop a variety of novel delivery and continuous manufacturing systems. Industry and academia experts present lectures and supervise laboratory exercises that provide a scientific overview of the entire tableting operation and extensive hands-on experience with advanced technology associated with developing and manufacturing tablets.

Lectures explore the concepts of tablet design using QbD principles, process validation, product evaluation, FDA guidelines for product development and manufacturing.  The laboratory portion of the course allows attendees to obtain hands-on practical experience in unit operations.

Attendees include domestic and international cross-functional representatives (e.g. R&D management/technical/regulatory, QC, manufacturing, sales and marketing) from the pharmaceutical, dietary supplement, animal health and food industries; regulatory agencies (e.g. FDA, Health Canada) and raw material/equipment suppliers.

The course was initiated in 1998 at the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy by Dr. Atul Shukla and Dr. James Johnson. It then moved to the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy in 2013 under the direction of Mr. Ed Brunson, program director, Dr. Mike Repka and Dr. Soumyajit Majumdar of the Department of Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery.  The course has been offered more than 50 times over the past 20 years.
