After a national search, the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy has named Soumyajit Majumdar associate dean for research and graduate programs.

“We are thrilled to have such a talented individual on our administrative team,” said David D. Allen, the school’s dean. “I have great confidence in Jit’s ability to move our school to the next level. His enthusiasm for excellence is infectious, and I can’t wait to see what new opportunities will arise with his leadership.”

Majumdar began his tenure with the school in 2005 as assistant professor in the pharmaceutics and drug delivery department. Since his promotion to associate professor in 2011, he has taken on multiple responsibilities including serving as associate director of the Pii Center for Pharmaceutical Technology and co-director of the Hands-on Course in Tablet Technology.

As associate dean, Majumdar is responsible for strengthening the school’s graduate programs and moving its research enterprise forward.

“The school has tremendous strengths and opportunities in various facets of natural products research, molecular biology, and drug discovery, delivery and evaluation,” Majumdar said. “Our strengths in community-based research programs and product positioning, valuation and market analysis complement the drug discovery strengths.

“What I find most exciting about this position is the opportunity to learn more about these individual strengths and figure out ways to facilitate collaborations and translation of discoveries from the bench to the clinic to the patients, as well as stimulating new discoveries or solutions based on clinical observations from community-based researchers and physicians.”

Majumdar said that the school has a very talented pool of faculty and researchers.

“There is tremendous potential for growth in both research and graduate education,” he said. “There are, however, several difficulties such as competition for limited resources both internally and externally. The challenge of developing opportunities in the face of obstacles attracted me to this position.”

Majumdar said he is excited for the opportunity to elevate the school’s research and graduate programs.

“Working with each and every person within the pharmacy school, I hope to help build a research and graduate program such that we can achieve the school’s vision of becoming a ‘highly respected community of learners, educators, scientists and practitioners whose innovative achievements position us as leaders in improving health and wellness,’” he said.
