Dr. Leon obtained his bachelor degree in chemistry from the National University of Colombia in 1998 and his Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry from the La Laguna University, Tenerife, Spain in 2005. In 2006, he was appointed as a postdoctoral position at the Institute of Bio-Organic Chemistry, “Antonio González”, -La Laguna University, Tenerife, Spain. In addition, he served as a postdoctoral researcher at the Polytechnic School, European University of Madrid, Madrid, Spain. In 2007, he accepted a position as an associate research scientist in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry, School of Pharmacy at the University of Mississippi, Oxford, Mississippi, USA. In 2009, he served as a researcher in Natural Products and Agrobiology Institute of the Spanish National Research Council (Spain). In 2013, he returned to the University of Mississippi in the Department of BioMolecular Sciences as research scientist under the supervision of Dr. Cutler. He has expertise in medicinal chemistry, natural products chemistry, synthesis and/or semi-synthesis of organic substances (flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenes). He has played an important role in the discovery of biologically active molecules that have potential usefulness as therapeutic agents or that serve as structural leads in the NIH-COBRE program. He has been involved in several national and international research projects, trained graduate and undergraduate students, and has taught courses to professional pharmacy and graduate students.
